The nearly 90-minute test flight, which took place at Eglin Air Base in the Florida Panhandle, is part of a wide-ranging effort by the US military to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Other flights are planned later this year. The U.S. imports about 70 percent of its oil consumption. The military is the single largest U.S. oil consumer, making it global operations potentially vulnerable to supply disruptions. Air Force officials say the aircraft performed normally during the test flight. The Camelina-based fuel was mixed with JP-8 jet fuel. “I couldn’t tell the difference between that and the JP-8 we use every day,” Maj. Chris Seager, a test pilot with the 40th Flight Test Squadron based at Eglin, told reporters. “It was very predictable, it was uneventful.” The A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft developed by the Fairchild-Republic company in the early 1970s. It was designed to provide close air support of ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles and other ground targets. Camelina is an oilseed plant native to Northern Europe and Central Asia that has been traditionally cultivated as an oilseed to produce vegetable oil and animal feed. It does not compete with food crops as it requires little water or nitrogen to thrive, and can be grown on marginal farm land. The Air Force’s goal is to certify all of its planes to be able to use the 50-50 blend by 2012, and to be able to obtain enough of the fuel to use it systemwide by 2016, Jeff Braun, who is overseeing the effort for the Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, told the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News. The center and Air Force Research Laboratory oversaw the test flight. The military is testing dozens of alternative fuel feedstocks including algae, fiber-based plants, fish oils, marine waste such as shells and wood chips. Among the goals is to find the proper mix in biofuels that allows them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during combustion without losing the lubrication qualities of traditional jet fuels.
