Using solar energy to cool buildings is enticing because the hottest times of the day coincide with the best times to harvest sunlight. Rather than use solar panels to make electricity, though, Chromasun's system converts heat into usable energy for cooling. The solar collector cannot completely cool a building but the idea is that the chiller will run on solar power during peak times, offsetting the most expensive periods to purchase electricity. Founded in 2008, Chromasun has developed a solar thermal collector appliance that uses reflectors to achieve 25 times sun concentration. The reflector optics are made of aluminium mirrors that pivot in unison to follow the sun. The entire appliance is enclosed in a sealed glazed canopy that protects it from the elements and it can be mounted on rooftops. Heat from the collector’s mirrors is transmitted to a stainless steel receiver tube capable of operating at up to 220°C and 40 bar pressure, and a wide variety of fluids can be heated including thermal oil, water, saturated steam, salines, slurries, or even beverages, according to Chromasun. “Solar driven air-conditioning systems can dramatically reduce peak grid demand and significantly improve building environmental performance,” said Jens Ove Albertsen from VKR Holdings, in an announcement about the investment. “Because of our investments in solar thermal, VKR has good insight into what many solar companies are doing to address cooling. It is with this perspective that I believe Chromasun is the company to watch in this space.” Chromasun has projects under development now in the U.S., Australia, Europe and the Middle East. The company says its business strategy is “simple; build products through contract manufacturing and ship them to integrators and large HVAC equipment suppliers globally.
