WindStream Technologies has selected southeastern Indiana to site its first small-scale wind turbine development and production facility. The investment of several million dollars will create about 260 jobs by 2012. WindStream, a startup company based in Manhattan Beach, California, southwest of Los Angeles, will build vertical turbines for power applications in urban areas. The company’s website says user markets include residential, light industrial and state and local governments. The turbines will be used to supplement existing power sources. There was no immediate information about what turbine models will be manufactured at the proposed New Albany location, or their power ratings or technical specifications. "We are very excited about the opportunity of locating our operations in New Albany and the support that Indiana has pledged to the company,” says Dan Bates, chief executive of WindStream. As an enticement to locate in the state, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the state's public-private economic development entity chaired by Governor Mitch Daniels, offered WindStream up to $1.5m in performance-based tax credits and up to $84,500 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. The WindStream facility will be located at the Purdue Technology Center in the Purdue Research Park in New Albany. WindStream joins a crowded small wind turbine market with 74 supplies in the US alone, according to the American Wind Energy Association. Sector sales were $156m in 2008.
